Ordeal Information Page

Congratulations, recently you were elected by your fellow troop members to become part of scouting’s national honor society, the Order of the Arrow (OA). In order to gain membership in the OA you must complete an ordeal, or a series of tests, to prove your sincere dedication to Scouting and the Order. This is an overnight event in which you will demonstrate you sincerity and desire to join our honored Order. After the Ordeal, you will be welcomed into the Order of the Arrow in a formal, time-ripened ceremony.

This page contains general information for Ordeal Candidates and parents concerning the Order of the Arrow Ordeal conducted by the Woa Cholena Lodge, Mobile Area Council.

When can I take my Ordeal?  Scouts and leaders elected as candidates have two opportunities to take their Ordeal.  These are in May and December at Camp Maubila.  Generally the December Ordeal is held the first weekend in December and the May Ordeal is held around the third weekend in May.  If you were elected you should receive a letter about a month before each function with the specific dates and costs.  If you have not received your letter you can call the Scout Office or ask any OA member.

What happens if I can't make it to or miss both of the Ordeals?  Each candidate has exactly one year of eligibility from the date of election.  After that date you must stand for election, provided you still meet the membership requirements.

What happens after my Ordeal?  After you have completed your Ordeal you will have the opportunity to shop at the trading post and meet your fellow lodge members.  There are always a variety of OA related items, both National and Lodge specific items, for you to purchase.

What happens if the weather is bad?  The Ordeal will be held regardless of the weather.  The only exception is if the weather will be bad enough for the even to be cancelled.

What will happen on my Ordeal?  The Ordeal is a series of "tests" that have been in effect since the founding of the Order and have stood the test of time.  In general, the following is what will take place on your Ordeal:  1) You will be required to sleep out under the stars the first night, So be prepared!  However, in inclement weather you will be directed to an area where you will be under cover for the night.  2) Once you have completed  your first night, you spend the day working around the camp on various projects.  3) At the end of the day you will be conducted to your induction ceremony.

What do I do when I get to Camp Maubila?  Each candidate must check-in and register at the Eagle Room before he/she does anything else.  Once you have checked in you will receive further instructions for the evening.
